Why Self-Care Is So Important // Self-Care Tips and Tricks

I saw a picture the other day that said ‘Self-Care isn’t Selfish, it’s Self-Respect’ and it got me thinking. Because, I feel as if sometimes its seen as selfish to be taking so much time to care for yourself. Like, you could be doing so much more with your time, helping so many other people and instead you’re taking a bath and drinking tea?

But, it’s wrong.

Let me give you an example.

On planes, they tell you to put on your oxygen mask before you put on someone else’s. You need to be able to help yourself, before you can help anyone else. That principal is applicable here. You can’t help someone until you help yourself.

It’s so vital for you to take care of yourself. Especially for people like me. Students and teenagers have it so bad. Because not only are they going through one of the most stressful periods of their life with all the changes physically and mentally, they have to worry about exams and homework and because of all of that, they’re lacking on sleep and social activities. It’s very easy for us to forget to take time for ourselves, to take time and get away, to have a bath and light candles and drink hot drinks or go for a walk and clear our heads.

Anyway, I feel as if I’ve ranted for far too long. Here are my personal favourite ways to take care of yourself.

 

Take A Break.

Even if it’s just for a few minutes, or for a day. You need that time away to refresh.

 

Take A Walk.

Or a run. Any sort of exercise releases endorphins which naturally make you feel better. Plus, getting some sun will boost your Vitamin D levels and make you feel brilliant.

 

Tidy Up.

I have no idea how this works but it does. Ten minutes spent tidying my room seems to make me feel better.

 

Drink Hot Drink.

Coffee. Tea. Hot Chocolate. Any sort of hot, indulgent drink. Treat yourself.

 

Get A Hug.

Grab yourself a human, or a cat. It stimulates the production of oxytocin, (and a ton of other things in your body) which is a chemical in your brain that makes you feel content and reduces stress and anxiety.

 

So, there you go. Those truly are my most trusted tips when it comes to taking some times for myself.
